Dear Parents and Guardians
As we approach our Faction Carnival, I would like to inform you of some changes we will be trialling this year. With growing student numbers and our ongoing commitment to maximising participation and opportunities for all students, the following changes will apply to the 200m and 400m events.
200m and 400m Events
The fastest two students from each faction will continue to be selected as normal. However, the two remaining lanes in each event will be designated as Wild Card lanes.
These lanes will be offered to the next two fastest students across all factions based on their trial times, regardless of faction. This will provide students who have performed strongly in trials but may not have secured one of their faction’s allocated places, with an additional opportunity to compete.
We believe this approach will provide more students with the chance to participate at a higher level, while also reducing some of the competitive pressure within individual factions. It will also help identify and support students who show strong potential for interschool competition.
Point System
To ensure fairness between factions, a point system will be implemented so that a maximum of two students from each faction can contribute points towards their faction’s total in each event.
Individual points and placings will still be awarded to students who finish 1st, 2nd, 3rd or 4th.
For example, if students from the same faction finish in all four placing positions:
• 1st and 2nd place will receive both faction and individual points. • 3rd and 4th place will receive individual points only. • No more than two students from the same faction will contribute points towards the overall faction total.
This initiative will be trialed during the 2026 Faction Carnival, and we welcome feedback from families, students and staff throughout the process.
