Miss Sutton News
We were delighted to share the wonderful news that Miss Sutton is expecting her first baby, due in July. We congratulate Miss Sutton and wish her all the very best as she prepares for this special time.
Miss Sutton’s last day at school will be Friday, 15 May. Year 5 families will be informed shortly about the replacement teacher to ensure continuity of learning for students.
We thank Miss Sutton for her commitment and care for our students and wish her every happiness in the months ahead.
Parent/Teacher Interviews
Each year, St Matthew’s School offers parents the opportunity to meet with their child’s class teachers to discuss their academic progress, share learning examples, and celebrate growth. This is an essential part of our reporting process, and we strongly recommend that all of our parents book a session with their class teacher. Thank you to those parents who attended interviews last week.
This week, we are continuing to offer 15-minute meetings during the following times:

Mothers’ Day Celebrations
We warmly invite our Junior Primary mothers and mother-figures to join us for our upcoming Mother’s Day celebrations at school. These special events provide a wonderful opportunity for students to acknowledge the important women in their lives and to share some meaningful moments together. Year 6 Camp (11 – 13 May)
Our Year 6 students will be attending camp at Ern Halliday Recreation Camp in Hillarys from 11–13 May. This camp experience is an important milestone for our students, providing valuable opportunities to develop teamwork, resilience and leadership skills.
Through a range of structured activities, students will be encouraged to step outside their comfort zones, work collaboratively and build independence while strengthening friendships. Year 6 parents are asked to please ensure they have read the Camp information available on the school app. We look forward to hearing about the many achievements and memorable experiences that come from this exciting time together.
Hockey Clinics
On 7 and 14 May, students in Years 3–6 will participate in hockey clinics as part of their Physical Education lessons. These sessions will provide students with the opportunity to develop their skills, teamwork and enjoyment of the sport.
Students are welcome to bring their own hockey sticks to these sessions if they wish.
School Cross Country
We are excited to announce that our St Matthew’s School Cross Country Carnival will take place on Tuesday, 19 May at the old golf course, located just behind the Narrogin BMX track.
All students from Years 1 to 6 will be involved in the event. This year, we will be trialling taking the whole school at the same time, so that students may watch and support each race, encouraging sportsmanship and school morale.
Event Schedule
The events will begin at approximately 11:30am and run in order of:
Race 1: Year 4 (1.5km)
Race 2: Year 3 (1.5km)
Race 3: Year 2 (1km)
Race 4: Year 1 (1km)
Race 5: Year 5 (2km)
Race 6: Year 6 (2km)
This is to allow our youngest students to recover after the walk to the location, and for our Year Six/Five students to volunteer on the track. Please allow for 10-15 minutes per race.
Flu Vaccine
Getting the flu vaccine is about more than just avoiding a few days in bed. It’s about looking out for those around us and helping keep everyone healthy:
· Helping keep children learning and playing
· Reducing time away from work and school
· Protecting vulnerable people who can become very unwell from flu
This year, FluMist® (the nasal spray flu vaccine) is available free of charge for children aged 2 to under 12 years. FluMist is a needle-free option, which many children find more comfortable and less stressful.

Jubilee Migrant Cross Visit
St Matthew’s School will be honoured to welcome the Jubilee Migrant Cross to our community on Tuesday 6 May. The Cross is a powerful symbol of faith, hope and unity, particularly for migrant communities, and its presence will provide a meaningful opportunity for reflection and prayer.
A special Prayer Service will be held on Friday 8 May, allowing students and staff to come together in prayer and deepen their understanding of the significance of the Jubilee Migrant Cross.
Uniform Requirements – Terms 2 and 3
During Terms 2 and 3, our senior students (Years 4–6) are required to wear the school tie with their formal uniform on Mondays and Wednesdays. This is a compulsory part of the uniform. Students who forget to wear their tie will be provided with one for the day, and parents will be notified.
We also kindly ask families to ensure students are meeting all uniform requirements, including those related to jewellery, socks and footwear. Formal uniform shoes must be entirely black, with no visible logos, emblems, coloured laces or contrasting colours. Shoes should be leather or leather‑look.
Thank you for your ongoing support in maintaining our school’s uniform standards.
Pupil Free Days – Friday, 29 May and Tuesday, 2 June
Please be advised that Friday, 29 May and Tuesday, 2 June will both be Pupil Free Days. All staff will be participating in professional learning focused on the Nationally Consistent Collection of Data (NCCD). These professional learning days support our teachers in strengthening inclusive practices and ensuring we continue to meet the learning needs of all students. Students will not attend school on the Pupil Free Days, and we thank families for their understanding and support.
In addition, Monday 1 June is a Public Holiday (WA Day).
Winter Carnival Years 4 – 6
On 2 July, all students in Years 4 – 6 will participate in the 2026 Winter Carnival, together with other local schools. Each child will be playing one of four sports: hockey, soccer, football or netball. The event will be held at the sporting facilities on Clayton Road, Narrogin. Please contact Amber Moulton (amber.moulton@cewa.edu.au) if you are available to coach a team, or lend a hand.
2027 Kindy Enrolments
Enrolments for Kindergarten 2027 are being accepted. Due to a large number of enquiries, families wishing to be included on the list for a Kindy Enrolment Interview must ensure that a completed enrolment pack is received by Friday, 14 August.
Enrolment interviews provide families with the opportunity to learn more about our Kindy curriculum and school procedures, and, most importantly, allow us to warmly welcome new families into the St Matthew’s community.
Applications for enrolment are considered in the following order:
- Catholic students from St Matthew’s Parish
- Catholic students from other parishes
- Siblings of non‑Catholic students already enrolled
- Non‑Catholic students from other Christian denominations
- Other non‑Catholic students
Parents who choose to apply for enrolment at St Matthew’s School accept that they will abide by the policies and practices of Catholic Education Western Australia (CEWA) and the School Leadership Team while their child is enrolled. Families are encouraged to speak with the Principal if they have any questions regarding school policies or practices.
If you know of families who may be ready to send their little ones to Kindy, please encourage them to visit the School Office to collect an enrolment pack.
Formal Reports
At St Matthew’s School, we value clear communication about your child’s learning. Reports are an important way to share progress and achievement, and they come in two forms: Interim Reports and End-of-Year Reports.
Interim Reports
Purpose: To keep you informed and allow time for support before the end of the year.
- Issued at the end of Semester 1.
- Provide an early snapshot of your child’s progress.
- Include grades (A–E) for each learning area, based on the Western Australian Achievement Standards.
- These grades are predictions of the likely end-of-year grade, using evidence from Semester 1 learning. They indicate how your child is tracking toward the expected standard for their year level.
How are predicted grades calculated? Teachers use:
- Evidence from Semester 1 assessments (tests, projects, observations).
- Judging Standards materials from SCSA, including annotated work samples and achievement descriptors.
- Consideration of your child’s consistency of performance and growth trajectory.
- A predicted grade assumes your child will continue progressing at a similar rate. It may change by the end of the year as the curriculum becomes more challenging or if significant improvement occurs.
- Also include comments on attitude, behaviour, and effort, and may outline areas for improvement.
- Written in plain language
End-of-Year Reports
Purpose: To reflect your child’s overall learning outcomes for the year.
- Issued at the end of Semester 2.
- Provide a comprehensive summary of your child’s achievement across the whole year.
- Include final grades (A–E) for each learning area, reflecting actual achievement against the Western Australian Achievement Standards.
- Contain comments on attitude, behaviour, and effort, plus teacher observations.
- Written in plain language
Effort Grades for Interim and End-of-Year Reports
St Matthew’s staff have collaborated to design an Effort Grade Rubric. The purpose of this rubric is to ensure consistency across classes and to give parents a clear understanding of what the effort grade measures.
Effort grades reflect a student’s application, persistence, and engagement in learning, rather than their academic ability. They consider factors such as:
- Work Completion
- Persistence
- Focus and Engagement
- Initiiative
- Presentation of Work
- Participation

Term Overviews
Term Overviews for each year level will be uploaded to the school app this week. This term, we are trialling the use of the SCSA Achievement Standards within these overviews to ensure greater clarity and consistency in communicating student learning.
The parent letter that accompanies the Term Overview includes specific information relevant to the year level, including curriculum focus areas and important dates for the term.
We encourage families to take the time to review this information to support ongoing learning conversations at home.
