Dear Parents & Carers,

Welcome to Week 9. As I will be taking leave from 22 June (Mon Week 10) until the end of this term, this will be the last newsletter for this term. Whilst I am away, Miss Lyndee Montgomery will be Acting Principal. I will take this opportunity to wish everyone a lovely break and thank you for your support this term.

NAIDOC 2026

NAIDOC Week runs from 5 July to 12 July. This is the first week of the school holidays and therefore we acknowledge this important celebration in Term 3. Each year, NAIDOC themes have called for truth, celebrated culture and honoured resistance and resilience. This year’s theme “Fifty Years Deadly” is a tribute to the people who built this movement. the Elders who stood firm, the organisers who made space, the artists who turned resistance into expression, and the communities who keep showing up, year after year.

Winter Carnival Years 4 – 6

On 2 July, all students in Years 4 – 6 will participate in the 2026 Winter Carnival, together with other local schools. Each child will be playing one of four sports: hockey, soccer, football or netball. The event will be held at the sporting facilities on Clayton Road, Narrogin. Please contact Amber Moulton (amber.moulton@cewa.edu.au) if you are available to coach a team, or lend a hand.

Winter Carnival Training Years 4 to 6

To help prepare students for the Winter Carnival, on the next two Fridays (19 and 26 June), those participating in hockey or football will walk to the Clayton Road playing fields at approximately 11:00 am. Students will return by lunchtime. Hockey players are welcome to bring their own sticks.

Interim Reports (Semester 1) vs End-of-Year Reports: What’s the Difference?

At St Matthew’s School, we value clear communication about your child’s learning. Reports are an important way to share progress and achievement, and they come in two forms: Interim Reports and End-of-Year Reports.

Interim Reports

• Purpose: To keep you informed and allow time for support before the end of the year.

• Issued at the end of Semester 1.
• Provide an early snapshot of your child’s progress.
• Include grades (A–E) for each learning area, based on the Western Australian Achievement Standards.
• These grades are predictions of the likely end-of-year grade, using evidence from Semester 1 learning. They indicate how your child is tracking toward the expected standard for their year level.

How are predicted grades calculated? Teachers use:

• Evidence from Semester 1 assessments (tests, projects, observations).
• Judging Standards materials from SCSA, including annotated work samples and achievement descriptors.
• Consideration of your child’s consistency of performance and growth trajectory.
• A predicted grade assumes your child will continue progressing at a similar rate. It may change by the end of the year as the curriculum becomes more challenging or if significant improvement occurs.

• Also include comments on attitude, behaviour, and effort, and may outline areas for improvement.

End-of-Year Reports

• Purpose: To reflect your child’s overall learning outcomes for the year.

• Issued at the end of Semester 2.
• Provide a comprehensive summary of your child’s achievement across the whole year.
• Include final grades (A–E) for each learning area, reflecting actual achievement against the Western Australian Achievement Standards.
• Contain comments on attitude, behaviour, and effort, plus teacher observations.

Both reports are written in plain language and aim to strengthen the partnership between school and home. If you have any questions about your child’s report, please contact their classroom teacher.

Changes to Interim Reports – Pre-Primary to Year 6

Interim reports will be available to parents from 30 June. This year, we have introduced some changes to the report format to improve clarity and consistency.
Achievement Standards for each subject area have now been included, providing clearer information about student progress. To accommodate this addition, reports will feature one general comment. This comment will typically include information about Religious Education, Mathematics, English, work behaviours, and social-emotional development.
This updated format gives teachers greater flexibility to focus on the areas most relevant to each individual student, ensuring comments are targeted and meaningful.

Accessing Interim Reports

Interim reports will be available to parents from 30 June. These reports will be available online through the Seqta Engage Website (https://matthews.engage.cewa.edu.au/). It is very important that parents have a password to access this site. New families will be sent a “Welcome” email. All other families are asked to contact Lyndee Montgomery (lyndee.montgomery@cewa.edu.au) should they require a new password, or have any difficulties logging into this site.

Kindy Enrolments – 2027

Enrolments for Kindergarten 2027 are being accepted. Due to a large number of enquiries, families wishing to be included on the list for a Kindy Enrolment Interview must ensure that a completed enrolment pack is received by Friday, 14 August.

Enrolment interviews provide families with the opportunity to learn more about our Kindy curriculum and school procedures, and, most importantly, allow us to warmly welcome new families into the St Matthew’s community.

Applications for enrolment are considered in the following order:

1. Catholic students from St Matthew’s Parish
2. Catholic students from other parishes
3. Siblings of non‑Catholic students already enrolled
4. Non‑Catholic students from other Christian denominations
5. Other non‑Catholic students

Parents who choose to apply for enrolment at St Matthew’s School accept that they will abide by the policies and practices of Catholic Education Western Australia (CEWA) and the School Leadership Team while their child is enrolled. Families are encouraged to speak with the Principal if they have any questions regarding school policies or practices.

If you know of families who may be ready to send their little ones to Kindy, please encourage them to visit the School Office to collect an enrolment pack.
