St Matthew’s School Narrogin

St Matthew’s School Narrogin

Year 2 & 3 Excursion

This term in Year 2 and 3, we have been learning about objects from the past and focusing on the similarities and differences between past and present.

To help explore these concepts, the two classes visited the Wagin Historical Village on Monday. We were very lucky to have 5 guest speakers talk to us about all the different displays.

We had great fun climbing on the old tractors and learning how to play olden day games. We learnt about houses through the ages (from wood and bag tents, to stick and mud houses)  and how we are lucky that we have all the modern things we do now.

We visited the old post office, phone exchange, stables, bank and one of our favourites was the school!! – We had to line up and pretend we went to school in the 1930’s – with chalk boards, old desks and a tiny classroom (that had no air conditioning!!) After we finished at the village, we had our lunch at the big ram.

A big thank you to Mrs Dyke and Miss Mowatt for planning this fabulous day.

Health Day 2019

On Friday the students, Pre-Primary to Year Six, participated in our CHAT Health Day. This day was aimed at students developing and engaging with the skills they have been learning in the classroom, during Health. The skills included: resilience, mindfulness, healthy eating, bouncing back, drug awareness and road safety.

As a school, we work in conjunction with the SDERA ( Schools Drug Education and Road safety Authority) to deliver an informative curriculum base around the skills the students tested on our health day.

We hope everyone had an enjoyable day putting their resilience, bouncing back and road safety skills etc to the test.

Christmas Pixie Post

The Pixies have arrived!! The Pixie Post Elves have set their mail box up outside Pre-Primary for everyone to post Christmas Cards.

Please remember to put your friend’s name and grade on the front of your envelope to ensure a safe delivery. Cards are not to contain any gifts or sweets; a simple sticker or well wish note may be put in your card for your friends. The Pixies will withhold any cards with treats, and they will be returned to sender at the end of the day. Get your cards in quickly, as the Elves will be delivering until Wednesday 11th December.

Focus on Maths

Doing Maths Together At Home

Talking about maths

It is important for children to develop specific language skills related to maths. Visits to the playground, or helping at home, provide rich and meaningful contexts to develop these skills. It might take time for your child to use these terms and language effectively, but exposure to this mathematical talk is a strong support for future learning.

Some activities to develop mathematical language:

» Use specific terms when asking for items. For example, ask your child to get the ‘one litre’ milk bottle from the fridge, or the ‘one kilo’ bag of flour from the cupboard.

» When cooking, talk about different measurements used, such as teaspoons, millilitres, litres, and cups. Discuss ideas about empty and full.

» As you walk, talk and play together describe your child’s movements as they climb ‘over’ the fence, slide ‘between’ the poles, and swing ‘under’ the monkey bars. This helps your child understand language related to spatial awareness.

» Sorting activities support your child to understand concepts such as ‘same’ and ‘different’. Use recycling as an opportunity to sort items to place in the rubbish. For example, paper, plastic, food waste and general waste.

Student Reports – Pre-Primary to Year 6

Teachers have been busy assessing and reporting for Semester Two. Reports will be available to parents via the school portal (SEQTA Engage) on Tuesday 10th December. The Semester Two Report will provide you with an assessment of your child’s progress and development across all subject areas. If you have any concerns about your child’s progress, please make an appointment to speak with your teacher. To access your child’s report, it is imperative that we have your current email address and you know your SEQTA Engage password. If you need to update any of this information, please advise the front office.
