Dear Parents and Carers

Year 4 Assembly

There was much excitement in the Library this morning as the Year 4 students performed the puppet play of the Bible story ‘The Prodigal Son’. The puppets were outstanding and made by the children with  assistance from parents.

This was the tenth puppet play written and directed by Mr Collins. The narration and puppetry were amazing, engaging all students and parents throughout. The puppet play was a wonderful way to  explore this story of forgiveness and love. A big thank you to all our parents, grandparents and visitors for joining us.

Book Week

Congratulations to all students (and parents), for their efforts with Book Week last Thursday. It was wonderful to see all our children and staff dressed as a book characters and bringing the book that their character was taken from.  A special thank you to Mrs Graham and Mrs Blyth, B1 & B2, for hosting and organizing our dress up parade, to Mr Tenney for making our Book Trees in the playground, and to Mrs Ong for all her continued efforts in the Library. It is an event that the community look forward to every year and creates a focus for the importance of reading.

Peter Scott Literacy Award

Last year as we prepared for our school Centenary Celebrations, we had a phone call from a former student, Mr Peter Scott, who said that he had wonderful memories of his schooling at St Matthew’s School. Because of this, he wanted to make a very generous donation to our school to purchase a significant amount of Library Books, Reading Books and to fund a writing competition over a ten-year period. You may have heard our wonderful students talking about their ‘Light Project’. ‘Light ‘is the theme for this year’s Literacy award and will have a narrative focus. Prizes will be awarded in every year level from Years 1-6 with the total prize money for the Literacy Award across the year levels totalling $500. Students have now completed their writing tasks and over the next few weeks, a decision will be made on who our lucky winners are. A huge thank you to Mr Scott for his support in furthering our Literacy focus at St Matthew’s.

Father’s Day Celebrations

Sunday 1 September is Father’s Day. To recognize the occasion, we would like to invite all our Dads for a Father’s Day breakfast on 30 August, at 7.30am. This will take place on the grassed area outside the canteen. All Dad’s are welcome. If you are unable to attend, please send along an uncle, friend or even Mum. Kindy Dad’s are also invited to the Kindy Father’s night on Thursday 29 August and Pre-Primary and Year One Dad’s are invited to a Father’s Day celebration on Friday 30 August at 2pm.

One Big Voice Music Festival

Our choir students head to the RAC Arena on Friday 30 August to participate in the One Big Voice Music Festival. Students will be leaving at 9am from school and travelling to Perth for an evening performance. It is an amazing opportunity to gather with over 6000 students from schools across Western Australia to come together as One Big Voice.

Optiminds

On Saturday 31 August, students in Enrichment are heading to Curtin University to participate in Optiminds 2019. Opti-MINDS is a creative problem-solving event for teams. Students have been working effortlessly to prepare for their challenges. Special thanks to Mr Tenney for organizing and preparing our students for this exciting competition.

We wish all our students, staff and families a wonderful weekend.

May God bless your week
